Title: Tour of the Labs at White Field at Notre Dame University

Description: This month the ASM-ND Chapter has an exciting meeting planned. On Tuesday, April 19 at 6:00 pm we are going be touring the Labs at White Field at the University of Notre Dame with Professor Thomas Corke. These labs contain facilities relating to the use of wind turbines for the generation of electricity. Also, some of these labs pertain to the aerospace labs at Notre Dame. After the meeting we will be going to Hacienda for dinner. The cost for this meeting is free but if you want to go to dinner at Hacienda after the meeting your will have to pay for yourself (typical cost for dinner is ~$12). The directions to the White Field labs is a little confusing so please see the LINK for more information or go to http://map.nd.edu . The building we will be meeting at is labeled as “Wind Tunnel” on the official University of Notre Dame map. It is located on the far North end of campus in White Field (White Field is also the field where tailgating occurs on Notre Dame home football weekends).

Unfortunately we have had to cancel the April Seminar.  We had a lack of interest and the logistics of the speaker travelling for the seminar without a minimum number of attendees just didn’t work out.  We apologize for any inconvenience and ask that you be sure to watch for any additional meetings in the future.

Title: March Technical Meeting – Synthetic Bone Substitutes
Location: The Boat House Warsaw, IN
Description: This month we have an exciting meeting planned on March 22 in Warsaw, IN. The presentation is “Synthetic Bone Substitutes Based on Hydroxyapatite Reinforced Polymeric Composites” and it will be presented by Tim Conrad. Hydroxyapatite reinforced polymeric composites are of interest due to the ability of bone to bone to the hydroxyapatite reinforcement. This presentation will examine the design consideration for these composites from a material science perspective: processing affects structure; structure affects properties; properties affects processing; and processing, structure, and properties all affect the performance of the material. The meeting will be held at the Boat House Restaurant in Warsaw, IN. Dinner choices will be prime rib, mahi-mahi, or roasted red pepper pasta at a cost $25. The meeting will start at 6:00 PM with a social period, followed at 6:30 PM with the presentation. Dinner will be after the presentation. Title: The Future of Materials Technology: Design, Failure Analysis, and Societal Impact

Description: The design cycle begins with materials selection with the requirements of disposal/recycling being as important as functional performance and economic viability. The future of materials technology is therefore linked to our global society in creating medical, consumer, industrial, and intellectual property products that will serve and meet new energy and ecological criteria. Examples will be presented that illustrates how design improvements are dependent on Life Cycle Design Engineering (LCDE) concepts starting with products and process design, including efficient in-line quality control, and feedback using failure analysis to anticipate and prevent adverse performance in the field.
